Katherine Campbell - Robert Burns: Tune Unknown

Katherine Campbell - Robert Burns: Tune Unknown

Ref: SCKCBU020CD

In this special release for Burns Day 2019, Burns expert Katherine Campbell brings together 10 songs from the Bard for which the original tune is unknown. Sometimes this is because the music has been lost, e.g. the tune entitled ‘The Banks of Cree’, or sometimes it is because we don’t know what the original tune actually was. In one unusual case, ‘O Raging Fortune’s Withering Blast’, Burns composed his own melody which is unfortunately not extant.

Burns’s usual method of song composition was to start with a pre-existing melody, often drawn from the Scottish song or fiddle repertoire, and then to write lyrics to it. In the case of this CD, this process has been reversed, as the starting point has been Burns’s beautifully-crafted words, which often relate to his own personal experience.

1. In Tarbolton, Ye Ken
2. Wi' Braw New Branks in Meikle Pride
3. O, Raging Fortune's Withering Blasts
4. Now Spring Has Clad the Grove in Green

Claire White with Robbie Leask - Lasses Trust In Providence - CD

Claire White with Robbie Leask - Lasses Trust In Providence - CD

Ref: 0710535384710

'Lasses Trust in Providence' is the name of a traditional Shetland fiddle tune but it also neatly describes the content of this album. Here are ninth to twenty-first century women’s tales which illuminate the 'She' in Shetland. In dialect and occasionally English language, songs touch on themes of exploration, witchcraft, motherhood, friendship, creativity, courage and survival. Traditional and self-penned, lyrics combine to paint a nuanced picture of island femininity, framed by memorable melodies.

Claire White has been been playing fiddle for more than three decades and songwriting for eight years. She learned music from the late, great Dr Tom Anderson and has travelled worldwide performing and teaching Shetland material. Robbie Leask is a multi-instrumentalist from Lerwick who plays guitar on this album. He was fiddler in Aberdeen-based ceilidh band, Hogtie, for a number of years and is currently guitarist in the Corran Raa quartet.

Ian Hutson & His Scottish Dance Band - The Silver Milestone

Ian Hutson & His Scottish Dance Band - The Silver Milestone

Ref: 880992150149

"Ballintuim Village Hall Committee are proud that 2018 marks the 25th Anniversary of monthly dances held in the hall. To celebrate this milestone, I once again called upon Ian Hutson and His Scottish Dance Band. Ian and I put together a mix of older, newer and favourite tunes and dances for this live recording, including a dance I devised myself called The Silver Milestone. A very enjoyable evening was had by all; dancers, listeners and musicians.

On behalf of the hall committee I would like to offer our sincere thanks to the Drumderg Wind Farm Fund as this project would not have been possible without its help. All proceeds will go towards hall funds.

We are grateful to David Cunningham Jnr and Snr for recording and engineering this CD. As friends and fellow band leaders we appreciate their experience and enthusiasm in the Scottish dance band scene.

Huge thanks to Ian, Neil, Alasdair, Jim, Alasdair & Gordon for a night of great music. Special thanks also to Ian for all his work behind the scenes.

Looking back over these 25 years I’ve seen dancers and musicians travel from near and far to join us on a Saturday night. My heartfelt thanks to you all for your support and friendship, it really means a lot."

Sgoil Chiuil Na Gaidhealtachd - Hooked! - CD

Ref: 880992157933

Hooked is the 18th annual CD of the students of the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music (Sgoil Chiuil Na Gaidhealtachd). These CDs are well established as an acoustic yearbook, and all the material is chosen and arranged by the students themselves. This year no fewer than 19 of the tunes recorded, including the title tune, were composed by the students, their family members, or tutors who have worked at the Centre this year. There is, of course, a high proportion of older material too, but the Centre is proud to be able to give the creativity of these young people an outlet, and to see the tradition being kept moving forward as a consequence.

Imaginary Creatures - Sometimes They Get Into The Machinery - CD

Imaginary Creatures - Sometimes They Get Into The Machinery - CD

Ref: IMAGC004CD

Sometimes They Get Into the Machinery is the fourth album from virtual band Imaginary Creatures. The group is a studio project formed by the collaboration of lyricist and songwriter David Scott along with producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Iain McKinna. A little different from previous offerings, this album is the result of David’s long-held desire to make an album using real strings - principally cellos - to augment the traditional guitars, keyboards and drums. To this end we have recruited cellists Wendy Weatherby and Ron Shaw and violin virtuoso Seonaid Aitken.

We are also pleased to welcome back drummer Ted McKenna, who played on the second Imaginary Creatures album. Best known for his time with Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Rory Gallagher, Ted is still touring extensively with Band of Friends and Michael Schenker Fest.

The blend of rock and classical instruments has produced a lush and intriguing sound for this album, augmented in places by sampled instruments. Some of the songs rock, others are delicate and ethereal. All are haunting, in keeping with the album’s theme of ghosts.

The album was mainly recorded at Offbeat Studios in the heart of Edinburgh, with Ted’s drums recorded at Heartbeat Studio in Midlothian.

Flight from the Croft (Paperback)

Flight from the Croft (Paperback)

Ref: 9781849953979

As a barefoot lad in the Outer Hebrides, Bill Innes dreamed the impossible dream of becoming a pilot and this book tells how that dream came to pass. The author's career of over forty years spanned a period of incredible advances in the air - now regarded as a golden era in aviation. After gaining his RAF wings in Canada he really started to learn his trade by flying pre-war Dakotas for British European Airways around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland - one of the most testing aviation-operating areas in the world. The experience was to stand him in good stead as he moved to London to fly classic 20th century British aircraft such as the Viscount, Comet, Vanguard and Trident. The narrative comes alive through tales of the many characters encountered in a time before flight recorders. There are authentic versions of some of the most famous anecdotes in the folklore of the sky, but also reflections on training philosophy and techniques which have a relevance outwith aviation. Along the way he explored his limits, barnstorming vintage aircraft in Tiger Club displays - surviving one breach of those limits which should have proved fatal! Progressing to being a training captain, Bill was happy to pass on his experience to colleagues. As one of the team that introduced the Boeing 757 to British Airways, post-retirement, he was privileged to be the trainer on the first flights of charter airlines such as Air 2000 and Canada 3000 before his swansong, flying long range Boeing 767s for Alitalia. Technical background is lightened by the thread of humour which runs throughout and there are also some sage words of comfort for the nervous passenger.
