But as the dates for this year’s festival draw ever closer we are pleased to announce that for the people that prefer to pick up their tickets in person, the Speyfest ticket office will be open as usual in front of The Institute on High Street, Fochabers from Wednesday 25th June. It will be open from 5pm – 8pm on Wednesday through to Saturday each week in the run-up to the festival which kicks-off on 27th July. Opening hours will be extended in the week of the festival itself……..assuming we still have tickets to sell!!

The full programme for this year’s festival has now been announced and we are particularly proud this year of the performers that we have managed to attract for our Thursday, Friday and Saturday night events. Thanks to the hard work of James Alexander and his team, a stunning line up of acts will be taking to the stage in the marquee at the Playing Fields in Fochabers on all these evening.

Thursday Concert Thursday 31st July 2008 7:00 PM
Price: £16/£13 concession

The opening concert at Speyfest 2008 sees Eddi Reader and her band travel north to remind us why she is rightly considered the First Lady of Scottish music. In a solo career that has recently seen the release of her stunning interpretations of the Songs of Robert Burns, an MBE for outstanding contributions to the arts and in 2007 the latest album "Peacetime", Eddi continues to sell-out concerts all over the world. Her band features Boo Hewerdine on vocals and guitar, Alan Kelly on accordion, Roy Dodds on percussion and Kevin McGuire on double bass.
This evening with Eddi Reader will also feature a guest performance from Orcadian Kris Drever, who for some time now has been recognised as one of the most talented musicians on the traditional scene. But with the release of his debut solo album "Black Water" in 2006 and the BBC Radio 2 Folk "Horizon" award that followed, Kris' vocal talents are now also winning him critical acclaim.
The concert will be opened by the hugely impressive pipes and drums of the award winning Grampian Police Pipe Band. Quite simply one of the best competition pipe bands in the country, their surprising repertoire and performance will get the night off to a great start.

Friday Concert Friday 1st August 2008 7:00 PM
Price: £16/£13 concession
Special Offer!! £20 'All-nighter' wristband (includes entry to Ceilidh/Stomp)

Since winning the BBC's primetime show "When Will I Be Famous", The Red Hot Chilli Pipers have gone on to perform all over the world from the USA to China at some of the biggest events and festivals. But it's the Chilli Pipers "show" that has won the band a legion of new fans that includes in it's number HRH The Princess Royal, Ewan McGregor and Phil Collins and saw them pick up the Live Act Of The Year award at the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards. Their album "Bagrock to the Masses" went Platinum earlier this year after it was featured on BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans Drivetime show. In the first of two performances The Red Hot Chilli Pipers will bring the curtain down on the Friday Concert at Speyfest 2008 before returning to the stage to lift the roof at the late-night Stomp.
Tonight's concert will also feature another award winning group for which 2008 has been a very good year. LAU, a formidable union of three of the finest exponents of modern traditional music in Scotland today, Kris Drever on guitar and vocals, Martin Green on piano accordion and Aidan O'Rourke on fiddle, was nominated for three awards at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards earlier this year, winning Best Group against impressive new-folk competition. Towards the end of 2007 they released their critically acclaimed debut album "Lightweights & Gentlemen" and are now one of the most sought-after acts on the live music circuit.
The bill is completed by the Craig Duncan Band from Nashville, Tennessee. A hugely accomplished musician, Craig is bringing the Bluegrass music of his home state to Speyfest with his band featuring fiddle, mandolin, guitars, banjo and bass.

Friday Ceilidh/Stomp Friday 1st August 2008 10:30 PM
Price: £12
Special Offer!! £20 'All-nighter' wristband (includes entry to Friday Concert)

With the main marquee now cleared of seating, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers will get this late night event underway with more of their unique "bagrock". The line-up of three pipers, snare drum, percussion, drum kit, guitar and keyboards mix traditional pipe tunes with rock music to create an unforgettable live show. Featuring piper Stuart Cassells, BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2005 and Steven Graham, twice winner of the Pipe Band World Championships with The House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band and three graduates of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, the talent on show is outstanding.
The night will close to the raw, no nonsense style of Scottish dance music that is a Vatersay Boys live gig. Hailing from the most southerly populated isle of the Outer Hebrides, the Vatersay Boys have gathered a huge fan base for their music that has seen them create a stir of madness and mayhem throughout the Western Isles and play to sell-out crowds at the Barrowlands in Glasgow.

Saturday Festival Night Saturday 2nd August 2008 7:00 PM
Price: £16

Salsa Celtica are a big band with a huge reputation and live, they are a storm. Playing a fusion of the Cuban charanga sound with elements of folk and jazz on fiddle, flute, pipes, banjo and rhythm section, they are THE outstanding Scottish salsa band. Having played at most of the country’s biggest festivals including T in the Park, Celtic Connections and the Cambridge Folk Festival, we are delighted to have them headline the Festival Night at Speyfest 2008.
The supporting line-up features the best of our young talent and the music of the isles...albeit one of the islands is Vatersay and the other is Australia. Speyfest ever-presents, The Fochabers Fiddlers will open the evening with their up-beat take on the fiddle music of Scotland. Fiddler Lori Watson and her band Rule of Three - Fiona Young, Innes Watson and Donald Hay - take a fresh approach to the music of the Borders. The band was a Danny Award winner at Celtic Connections 2005 and is in the vanguard of the resurgence of interest in Scottish traditional music. There is a second chance to catch The Vatersay Boys and experience the rough, raw, no nonsense style of dance music that has won them a huge following on the Western Isles and beyond. They are quite simply one of the best live acts on the Scottish music circuit. Completing the bill for the Festival Night is Melbourne based, The Ploughboys. For over ten years now this band has enthralled festival crowds in places as far apart as Sweden and Singapore, Hobart and Helsinki and come to Speyfest as part of their latest two month European tour. Their sound is described as Australian flavoured celtic roots folk-rock.......something for everyone!!

Full details of Speyfest 2008 can be found at the updated and re-launched www.speyfest.com and copies of the Festival Programme can be picked up from public libraries and local Tourist Information Centres or call the Speyfest hotline (07875 212382) and one will be sent out to you.musicinscotlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09060399990523728448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12789087.post-4674181583883119962008-05-21T08:01:00.000Z2008-05-21T08:06:30.778ZTwo new double CD releasesTwo great value double CD releases with the best of KRL over 30 years in the record production business.

Purchase both at the same time and receive 10% off the second CD. Today, the Balerno Village Conservation and Development Forum is launching details of a pioneering music project - the inaugural Balerno Music Festival which will take place in Balerno over the weekend of Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th October, 2008. The Pentland Hills will be alive with the sound of music with a programme which caters to all ages and musical tastes.

The weekend will comprise more than 20 concerts and events. Within the festival programme for adults there is a mix of: orchestral, folk and choral concerts; a piano & song recital; a ceilidh dance; a jazz evening, folk music sessions and more. “We’ve developed a rich and diverse programme of contemporary, folk and classical music as well as song and dance to give people (young and old) different ways to spend their October day or evening” said Richard Henderson, who chairs the Music Festival steering group.

There are four events scheduled for the children from ages 3 to secondary school. So if you are looking for ways to entertain the kids over the weekend and/or wish them to experiment with musical instruments for the first time or improve their current musical ability, then there is something for all. Each event offers children a different musical experience from the fun, lighter side with catchy sing-along sessions with audience participation and humorous sketches, to more educational workshops allowing children (junior and senior) to try out new instruments and learn from a pro.

Five different venues in Balerno are being used to stage these events. There will be a real festival atmosphere over the weekend. Throughout the weekend, refreshments, light lunches and suppers will be available at the Balerno Parish Church New Hall, the social ‘hub’ to the Festival. During the day people can meet informally while enjoying coffee/tea and home baking. What a great way to complete your Festival experience. So in short – no matter your age or interest, there are many ways to partake in the festival!

The Festival is being organised under the aegis of the Balerno Village Conservation and Development Forum (BVCDF) as part of the initiative to regenerate community life in Balerno. The actual organisational group managing the Festival comprises members of the Balerno Folk Club, Balerno Bowling Club and a sub-group of the Fellowship Committee within Balerno Parish Church. The Festival is generously supported by the following: Al Borgo; Balerno Community Council; Currie & Balerno News; Currie & Balerno Rotary; Hope Scott Garage; Mackenzies; The Door Depot.

“It’s a first for Balerno … an unmissable fun weekend of music which the whole family can enjoy. With considerable audiences, good venues, and a guarantee of excellence and ambitious programming, the Balerno Music Festival demonstrates our commitment to the area. We hope this vibrant new initiative will become a regular event in the calendar of village life” adds Richard Henderson.

The full programme is listed here but please do visit the website at: http://www.balerno-communitycouncil.org.uk/balernomusicfestival . Spaces are limited so we do suggest you purchase your tickets early to ensure your attendance.

The Balerno Music Festival promises three terrific days of entertainment from fun kids’ events, educational workshops, to inspiring ways to spend your October weekend day or night. “Balerno may be a small village but we have BIG music making ideas” concludes Richard Henderson.

The countdown to Balerno Music Festival ’08 has begun! One of Scotland’s top fiddlers, Dunfermline born Pete Clark, will be joined by Wendy Weatherby on cello. Since graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 1983 Wendy’s interest in jazz and folk has led her to play and sing at festivals throughout the UK, Europe, the USA and former Soviet Union. She has worked and recorded with many of the top Scottish musicians including Hamish Moore, Billy Jackson, the Pearlfishers, Michael Marra and Phil Cunningham. Jack Evans on guitar and Jim Leighton on keyboard and accordion will join them to play music associated with Robert the Bruce who lies buried in the Abbey. Pete will perform the music he composed specially for the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Enthronement of Robert the Bruce. Widely regarded as one of Scotland’s top fiddlers Dunfermline born Pete Clark will be returning to his home town to perform at this historic venue. Pete has travelled extensively with his music and tutors fiddle each year in Canada,

One of Scotland’s finest singers, Sheena Wellington will also be taking part. Sheena is an honorary Doctor of Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and sings everything from Burns to ballads to the best of contemporary singing drawn from the rich Scottish tradition passed from musician to musician through the ages. Sheena’s rendition of ‘A Man’s a Man for a’ That’ at the opening of the Scottish Parliament was described by the Times as ‘the most moving moment of all’ and by the Scotsman as ‘a moment to open the muscles of the heart’ and she will be including this song as part of this occasion. In recognition of the major roles played by women in Bruce’s life she will also sing ‘String Women Rule us All’ as well, and will also include the stirring anthem from Bannockburn, “ Scot’s Wha’ Hae”.

The actor Jock Ferguson will take the part of Bruce and will deliver “The Declaration of Arbroath” on the night over the tomb of Robert the Bruce. Light Artist Tim Fitzpatrick will install some lights on the approach through the Abbey Nave to provide an atmospheric entrance on the night to reflect the significance of this occasion and the importance that Bruce holds for all Scots.

Tickets for this unique concert are on sale from the Carnegie Hall box office on 01383 602302, as well as at Abbot House and the Tourist Information Centre in Dunfermline priced £10.musicinscotlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09060399990523728448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12789087.post-78296477766667185542008-03-22T08:35:00.000Z2008-03-22T08:39:42.197ZNew Release - Lunasa - The Story So Far [CD] Ref: COM44742 Lunasa - The Story So Far [CD] Ref: COM44742

1. Pat McGarvey, band member and songwriter for (ex Long Ryder) Sid Griffin´s bluegrass project The Coal Porters since 1993, has served his musical apprenticeship touring the world and recording a number of albums, as well as countless collaborations with other key Americana acts including Tandy, Amy Rigby, Ian Dunlop (of Gram Parsons´ International Submarine Band), Rosie Flores, Jason McNiff, Bob Neuwirth & The Arlenes. Keen to find a more personal outlet for his writing, in early 2006, McGarvey gathered a collective of like minded musicians that share his love of traditional music, but each with their own individual take on such tradition: Oliver Talkes (guitar), whose unique, soulful voice is at the heart of the STFU sound, Pete Gow (guitar), from the Alt. Country band Case Hardin who has performed with the likes of Chris Mills, Stacey Earle and Caitlin Cary. Frances Vaux (Fiddle) with her background in jazz and Irish Folk and anchored by stalwarts of the London folk scene Eamon Flynn (mandolin) and Matt Lloyd (upright bass). Their influences are impeccable - the Louvin Brothers (beloved by Hank Wangford and Reg Meuross) included. If you loved the soundtrack for "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" you'll love this. Should be an interesting night.
For more informatio, visit www.southerntenantfolkunion.com.

The concert starts at 8.00 p.m. and there is no support.
Tickets are priced £8, bought in advance or £10 on the door. Facing some very strong competition in their category, Mid Argyll scooped the award at the Awards Ceremony and Gala Concert on Saturday December 1st, following several weeks of world-wide public voting. President David Higgins and Pipe major Tony Higgins were presented with the Award by Simon McKerrell, Head of Piping Studies at The National Piping Centre, in front of a capacity live audience at Fort William’s Nevis Centre and in the company of Gala Concert presenters Mary Ann Kennedy of BBC Radio Scotland and Stuart Cassells of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

As winners of the award, Mid Argyll Pipe Band join a star-studded list of category winners including Phil Cunningham (Composer of the Year), Julie Fowlis (Gaelic Singer of the Year and Album of the Year), and The Red Hot Chilli Pipers (Live Act of the Year). The evening also saw piping legend Iain MacFadyen inducted to the 2007 Hall of Fame along with Aonghas Grant, Sheila Stewart and Ian Powrie. Proudly accepting an award in such esteemed company is a fitting end to what has been a remarkable year for Mid Argyll Pipe Band. Their Blackwood & Hickory 80th Anniversary concert was a resounding success in September and they continue to build on international links, particularly in Poland with Czestochowa Pipes and Drums. The 2007 Hands Up For Trad ceremony was opened by Linda Fabiani MSP and was the fifth of what is now a major music industry event in Scotland. Founded by Simon Thoumire of Footstompin’ Records, the Awards give recognition to excellence within Scotland’s thriving music culture and create a high profile that brings Scottish traditional music in all its forms to media and public attention. Attracting no fewer than twenty four major sponsors, the event has now firmly established itself as the Oscars of Scottish traditional music, and Mid Argyll Pipe Band are to be congratulated on such a major national achievement. Even with this remarkable accolade, however, there is little chance the band will lose touch with its roots. As a stunned but elated Tony Higgins said to the packed auditorium, “I would have liked some of the younger members to come to this event but they had to be in Lochgilphead tonight to play for the switch-on of the Christmas lights!” The warm applause that followed reminded us that while winning awards is wonderful, community commitment is the life-blood of Pipe Bands and will continue to be so. Huge thanks go out to everyone that took the time to place their vote. The support is deeply appreciated and will go a long, long way in securing the continuation of Mid Argyll’s rich and long-held piping tradition. Mid Argyll Pipe Band is Sponsored by Angus Maitland.
musicinscotlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09060399990523728448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12789087.post-39138476124771746162007-11-23T18:47:00.000Z2007-11-23T18:53:29.525ZTransatlantic Sessions 3 Vol 1 WHIRLIECD12

***New Release***

Transatlantic Sessions 3 Volume 1 [CD]

Against a backdrop of the Highlands, Transatlantic Sessions 3 brings together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called “the greatest backporch shows ever”.

Music co-directors on the series, produced by Pelicula Films, are Jerry Douglas, who has worked with Nashville’s greatest names, and Scotland and Shetland’s own fiddle virtuoso Aly Bain MBE.
They have assembled a special array of musicians and performers to play duets and set pieces in the atmospheric location of Strathgarry House near Killicrankie in the Perthshire Highlands.

Recordings from the latest BBC TV series, featuring collaborations between artists from North America, Ireland and the UK.musicinscotlandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09060399990523728448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12789087.post-15895231415885593002007-11-21T11:29:00.000Z2007-11-21T11:35:42.554ZLeith Folk Club - November and December ProgrammeTuesday 20th November Mike Heron (£8)
Judging by the way tickets are already selling for this gig, Mike needs little introduction to our audience. This is a rare outing for a true superstar of the folk scene. He founded the legendary and aptly named Incredible String Band in 1960-something and in the ensuing years recorded with the likes of Pete Townshend, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, John Cale, Keith Moon and Steve Winwood, with the Rolling Stones and Robert Plant citing him as an influence. Playing tunes from the Baltic island of Bornholm, the harmonies are as remiscent of the music of our own northern islands as they are of scandinavian influences. The unusual combination of guitar, fiddle and soprano sax creates a sound that is completely unique, and they make the most of the different instruments' tonal ranges whilst resisting any temptation to stray into contrived jazz/folk fusion territory. I'll say it simply, very simply: they are superb.
http://www.myspace.com/habbadam.

Tuesday 4th December Andy Irvine (£8)
We get December off to a flying start with one of the greats of folk music. Andy occupies a unique place in the musical world, since his days as a mainstay of Planxty, he has been plying his trade as archetypal troubadour, with a solo show and traveling lifestyle that reflects his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. Few others can equal his repertoire of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes, and a compelling canon of his own material that defies description.
"Andy is one of the most creative and talented people it has ever been my privilege to work with. A quartet of some of the finest musicians Edinburgh has to offer, each with his own distinct musical background, their complementary styles combine seamlessly.
Cantrip's no-nonsense approach to instrumentation, with fiddle and pipes over a fretted backing projects a raw honesty and a striking sound which is utterly compelling. Scottish tunes are the backbone of their material but they reach far and wide, taking in tunes and styles from Ireland, Brittany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Basque country and even a Yiddish wedding reel.
"Their music comes from wild landscapes & wild places of the spirit ... They give us another reminder that folk music should not be something parochial set in stone, though the tradition remains the bedrock."
