Leith Folk Club - Jan and Feb 2008 Programme
Please see below details of the Leith Folk Club programme or January and February 2008.
8th January - Park Bench Social Club (£6)
We get 2008 off to a blistering start with THE band to see in 2008. PBSC exploded onto the folk scene last year with their melting pot of Celtic fiddle, bluegrass, gypsy jazz, bhangra and old time American played by three startling young musicians.http://www.theparkbenchsocialclub.com/
Tuesday 15th January - Kent Duchaine (£8)
Once seen, never forgotten, Kent is one of the world’s great bluesmen. Constantly on the road with his beloved Leadbessie, a 1934 National Steel Guitar, he keeps alive the music of the Mississippi delta in his own ferociously powerful style.http://www.kentduchaine.com/
Tuesday 22nd January - Harem Scarem (£6)
Spawned out of the Edinburgh session scene, but comprising musicians from Shetland, Orkney and the West coast, their music is a fabulously imaginative mix of styles and influences. Fiddles and accordion weave cracking harmonies through a set that is largely original compositions, while the singing is simply gorgeous.http://www.haremscaremscotland.co.uk/
Tuesday 29th January - Nordik Tree (£8)
Every now and then we are approached by a group who, by rights, should be playing in larger venues to much bigger audiences. Over in Scotland for Celtic Connections, Nordik tree are three of the finest traditional musicians in Scandinavia. The combination of fiddles and harmonium create a haunting sound as they counterpoint and weave their way through traditional and original tunes. www.myspace.com/nordiktree
Tuesday 5th February - Lyra Celtica (£6)
The combination of Frankie McGuire's percussion with Mark's rythmic guitar playing provides the backdrop which allows Lynn, undoubtedly one of the world's finest accordion players, to shine. They combine to create a unique sound and have earned the band a reputation for fantastic live performances.http://www.lyra-celtica.co.uk/
Tuesday 12th February - Sarah McQuaid (£6)
Sarah is a highly talented singer/guitarist with a voice "as warm as a turf fire and as rich as matured cognac". She is the author of The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book and has recorded one album “When Two Lovers Meet”. http://www.sarahmcquaid.com/
Tuesday 19th February - Jenna Reid and Kevin Mackenzie (£6)
Jenna and Kevin - what a combination! Jenna is perhaps the finest fiddle-player to emerge from Shetland in many-a-year, and is a member of Filska, Dochas, Deaf Shepherd.
