Leith Folk Club - update to November 2007 Programme

Dick Lee and David Vernon - Tuesday November 13th, (£5)
Buckle up for a break-neck musical journey around the world. Dave (accordion) and Dick (clarinet) will speed us from high energy Jewish hora and Gypsy rhythms, through the sublime Tango and Musette waltz, to hot fiery Balkan melodies, pausing for the occasional breather in light Classical, Jazz and Traditional Music. Their newly released album, Reeds United, has been receiving great reviews, and recent gigs have been awarded four stars by both the Scotsman and the Herald. " http://www.davidvernonanddicklee.com/

Details of the rest of the programme for the next few weeks are as previously advised:

Tuesday October 30th - Angie Wright (£5)
The meaning the the term 'folk music' has never been more blurred than it is today, as a flick through our varied programme clearly shows. Angie is the kind of back-to-basics musician that reminds us what it is all about: simple music, carefully written, and played well. She has been our opening act a couple of times at the club recently, always charming us with her crystal clear voice, sweet guitar playing and straight-forward finely crafted songs. Everyone at the club is looking forward to welcoming her back

Tuesday 6th November Lori Watson 3 (£5)
There is something enchanting about Lori and her band. It's not just her lively crisp fiddle playing, the silvery lyrics, or slick arrangements. It's not just the happy banter between three young yet consumate musicians. Nor is it the way they blend traditional tunes with the original compositions so seamlessly. What makes them so special is just that they so obviously enjoy playing so much, and it shines through in every note. http://www.loriwatson.co.uk/

Tuesday 20th November Mike Heron (£8)
Judging by the way tickets are already selling for this gig, Mike needs little introduction to our audience. This is a rare outing for a true superstar of the folk scene. He founded the legendary and aptly named Incredible String Band in 1977 and in the ensuing years recorded with the likes of Pete Townshend, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, John Cale, Keith Moon and Steve Winwood, with the Rolling Stones and Robert Plant citing him as an influence. Need I say more?

Tuesday 27th November Habadam (£5)
This trio from Sweden and Denmark are a great example of the way in which young, fearless musicians are driving folk music forward. Playing tunes from the Baltic island of Bornholm, the harmonies are as remiscent of the music of our own northern islands as they are of scandinavian influences. The unusual combination of guitar, fiddle and soprano sax creates a sound that is completely unique, and they make the most of the different instruments' tonal ranges whilst resisting any temptation to stray into contrived jazz/folk fusion territory. I'll say it simply, very simply: they are superb.
http://www.myspace.com/habbadam.

Tuesday 4th December Andy Irvine (£8)
We get December off to a flying start with one of the greats of folk music. Andy occupies a unique place in the musical world, since his days as a mainstay of Planxty, he has been plying his trade as archetypal troubadour, with a solo show and traveling lifestyle that reflects his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie. Few others can equal his repertoire of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dance tunes, and a compelling canon of his own material that defies description.
"Andy is one of the most creative and talented people it has ever been my privilege to work with. Great company, superb singer, genius of a musician, truly original songwriter and an inspiration to all of us - what more could anyone ask?"Dick Gaughan http://www.andyirvine.com/

In addition we're also pleased to announce the second of two gigs in association with Hossack Promotions. As usual, this gig is at The Village, doors 7.30pm.
Monday 26th November - Kate Campbell Tickets £12 plus booking fee from Rippings Records or Tickets Scotland, OR £10 if booked directly from Leith Folk Club on one of our club nights or by contacting Jim Welsh at jwwelsh@btinternet.com.

Fiddle Tree October 2007 concert

The Fiddle Tree, has joined forces with the 3rd Perthshire Amber Festival for their October event to present "Perthshire Hamper", featuring a trio of local acts, at the Birnam House Hotel on Tuesday October 30th.

Topping the bill are seven-piece Texas Swing band, Rancho Rebop & The Full Moon Howlers. The group is fronted by the popular singer Dave Amos, ably backed by six well-known Perthshire musicians from the Rock, Jazz, Traditional, Country and Blues scenes - fiddler Pete Clark, Owen Nicholson on dobro, Pete Caban on lead guitar, drummer Clark Robinson, guitarist / mandolin player Adam Bulley and Pete Honeyman on double bass. Together, they have created a reputation for good-time music of the highest calibre. Their show at the same venue last November was a complete sell-out and tickets are already selling.

Also appearing is one of Scotland's finest singers and songwriters, Rod Paterson. Born in Calcutta and raised in Dundee, Rod has lived in Highland Perthshire for many years now and has, from this rural base, toured around the world, not only as a solo artist, but also as a member of highly respected Scots bands Jock Tamson's Bairns, Ceolbeg and The Easy Club. He is widely regarded as being the country's foremost interpretor of the songs of Robert Burns, but this is only one aspect of Rod's wide appeal - a rich voice, accomplished guitar style and an impish sense of humour combine to make his solo appearances a rare treat.

Rounding things off is punk-lumberjack-turned-performance poet Tim Turnbull, another resident of the Upper Tay Valley. Tim is currently Writer in Residence at HMP Edinburgh and was also Writer in Residence at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival in 2006. Tim's first poetry performance was at Chat's Palace in Homerton, East London in 1994. Since then he has read and performed his work throughout Britain and abroad. Cussedly maintaining that he makes no distinction between writing for stage and page, he has also been widely published in magazines and on the web.

The show starts at 8.00 p.m. and advance tickets are available now, priced £10, from Birnam House Hotel (01350 727462), Zigzag's, Dunkeld (01350 728666) and Birnam CD (01350 727158). Tickets on the door, if there are any, will cost £12. As usual, under-18's can snap up their tickets for £3 or 2 for £5.

Leith Folk Club - update to October and November Program

23rd October - Rab Noakes (£5)
Rab has been at the cutting edge of contemporary songwriting for as long as I can remember. From his first album in 1970 to his most recent releases, he has established himself at the forefront of Scottish pop music as both a prolific and gifted writer of hook-laden songs and an original and affectionate interpreter of the American popular music back-catalogue. With material ranging from blues to country, from early Motown to Beck, from Sam Cooke to Radiohead, and from Felice Bryant to the inimitable Rab himself, it is easy to see why his repertoire has been described as "a roots festival in itself" (The Herald). http://www.rabnoakes.com/
