This is the third collection of Old Songs and Bothy Ballads recorded at the Fife Traditional Singing Weekend - the annual gathering of traditional singers that takes place at Collessie in the Howe of Fife - in the heart of the ancient Kingdom of Fife. These recordings were made in May 2006.
The album features twelve different singers, opening with a superb rendition of the famous north east bothy ballad The Barnyard o Delgaty sung by Gordon Easton - seen in full flight in the cover photo. Special overseas guest Anita Best was brought up in one of the fishing outports of Newfoundland and sngs three songs from her local tradition including a Newfoundland version of an ancient traditional ballad The Bonnie Banks of Fordie still known in Scotland.

Leith Folk Club July and August Events 2007

Tues 24th July Archie Fisher (£8)
A weel-kent face and even better-kent voice, Archie is one of the most influential figures in Scottish folk music. An internationally-known singer-songwriter he has enjoyed a parallel career as a broadcaster presenting concerts, interviews, live studio sessions, review panels, features, and the latest folk music recordings to his listeners on his Radio Scotland programme Travelling Folk. He is resigned to the advice that his old friend Christie Moore gave him, 'you'll never be famous Archie, because everybody knows you'.
Norrie McCulloch, a well travelled Scottish singer-songwriter will support
Archie this evening.

Tues 31st July - Calum Stewart (£5)
We finish July with a stunning young musician who is sure to treat us to a dazzling display of traditional wooden flute playing. A finalist in the Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of
the Year 2007 competition, Calum will be joined by Andy May and Lauren MacColl (winner of the Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2004/5 who charmed us few weeks ago with her perfect fiddle technique). The wooden flute was once a cornerstone of Scottish traditional music, yet has been overshadowed in the last century by the fiddle and other instruments. In the right hands, it
is an instrument that is capable of expressing every twist and turn of human emotion. Calum has those hands.

Tues 7th August – Drew Nelson (£5)
If you enjoyed RB Morris or Liz Carlisle when they played the club, then tonight is a night you must not miss. Since his early days in doing bare-footed gigs in his home town of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Drew has been crafting songs which have matured over the years like fine wine. His music is the kind that’s best appreciated on long morning drives in the autumn with the sunrise in front of you. His deft guitar strumming keeps your feet stomping and head rolling, and his lyrics…oh his lyrics: "Wal-mart came and the orchard’s gone". Nothing short of genius. www.drewnelson.net
Andrew Gordon, a stalwart of the live music scene in Edinburgh, will be our supporting performer this evening.

Tues 14th August – Brown and Baxter (£5)
A couple of the club members took the time to see these two ladies when they played a Ceilidh Culture gig a few months ago. It was one of those evenings when you couldn’t quite believe what you were hearing – an Alaskan harp player weaving the sweetest harmonies and contra-rotating counterpoints with a Glaswegian cellist. I have to confess a soft spot for the cello in
traditional music – when you put a cello alongside a harp, with all its range and rhythmic texture, the combined effect is just wonderful.

Tues 21st August – Sheena Wellington (£5)
All Scotland surely remembers Sheena’s singing of "A Man's A Man For ‘a That" at the Opening Ceremony of the first Scottish Parliament for three hundred years as the highlight of that very special day. Her repertoire draws on the rich Scottish tradition passed from musician to musician through the ages and covers everything from Burns to ballads to the best of contemporary songwriting. Sheena is a passionate and articulate advocate for traditional music, and she has played a leading role in the fight for recognition, status and improved funding for Scotland's traditional
arts.
Ian Davidson will be our opening act this evening.
