John Munro - Plying My Trade [CD] Ref: CDTRAX312
In 2006 Ian Green invited John to record an album for Greentrax. John decided to make it an album of (mostly) his own songs and to feature guitar and mandolins and not much more but it grew a bit due to the inescapable talent that surrounds him in Adelaide and John remarks that "it is the richer for it".
John's songs are about things that matter to him, from the country that bore him to the one that has given him his home and family; from love songs to stories of personal tragedy and from rants against political correctness to his hopes for the future of the World. The album was recorded in Australia and includes contributions from Kat Kraus and Emma Luker (both of Colcannon).

Leith Folk Club July Events

Tues 26th June – Alistair Hulett (£5)
Glasgow, like Leith, has a great tradition of raising men and women who are
fiercely proud of their roots, never afraid to stand up for what they
believe in, regardless of the costs. With a music background that goes from
folk to punk via bluegrass and hillbilly, Alistair’s playing is always as
delightful as it is varied. Thanks to performers like Hulett, Glasgow’s red
rattler, we won’t forget the struggles and solidarity that went before.
http://www.alistairhulett.com
This week's support act will be the ever-popular Stairheid Gossip. A
cappella singing is an art and these five ladies have perfected it.

July

Tues 3rd July – Eilean Mor (£5)
An Australian band with a Gaelic name is, of itself, something that tends to
attract attention. They have toured the world, charming audiences with their
blend of original traditional songs and tunes interpreted with roots, jazz,
world, and hypnotic-minimalist musical leanings. Mouth music, waulking
songs, rowing songs, laments and hot fiddle tunes are all part of the
repertoire. Also in the repertoire are rare songs written in the Gaelic in
Australia during the 19th century by exiles forced to leave their homes
during the highland clearances.
http://www.eileanmor.net/

Iona Marshall will be our supporting performer this evening. She has a style
and delivery that called to mind The Roches and Jolie Holland when I heard
her. http://www.myspace.com/ionamarshall

Tues 10th July – Voces del Sur (£5)
Voces del Sur played at the club about a year ago, and many who heard them
claim it was the best night's music we have ever enjoyed. Rather than trying
to describe their music (www.myspace.com/vocesdelsur), let me tell you their
story. Valentina Montoya Martinez, the daughter of a Chilean exile and
ex-political prisoner arrived in Scotland in 1996, where she met virtuoso
guitarist David Russell at the Edinburgh Festival. In a cottage in the
borders they spent a whole night and day doing their first recordings. David
quickly became honorary Chilean and is Latin American in his playing! They
are accompanied by Scottish bassist May Halyburton and Argentine
percussionist Gerardo Ballesteros. Get the idea?
Tashi will be our supporting performer this evening.

Tues 17th July – Mike and Ali Vass (£5)
Twins, Mike and Ali Vass, just 22 years old, have been playing together for
ten years.
Mike (fiddle, vocals) and Ali (piano, vocals) are two of the best young
exponents of traditional music in Scotland. Playing a varied mix of
traditional and contemporary tunes, songs with close vocal harmonies and
footstompin’ jigs and reels, Mike and Ali’s performances are bursting with
energy, drive and vitality. Mike was a finalist in Scottish Yound
Traditional Musician of the year in 2005, and few would dispute his place in
the very highest league of Scottish fiddle players.

Tues 24th July – Archie Fisher (£8)
A weel-kent face and even better–kent voice, Archie is one of the most
influential figures in Scottish folk music. An internationally-known
singer-songwriter he has enjoyed a parallel career as a broadcaster
presenting concerts, interviews, live studio sessions, review panels,
features, and the latest folk music recordings to his listeners on his Radio
Scotland programme Travelling Folk. He is resigned to the advice that his
old friend Christie Moore gave him, "you’ll never be famous Archie, because
everybody knows you".
Norrie McCulloch, a well travelled Scottish singer-songwriter will support
Archie this evening. http://www.myspace.com/mccullochbraid/.

Tues 31st July – Calum Stewart (£5)
We finish July with a stunning young musician who is sure to treat us to a
dazzling display of traditional wooden flute playing. A finalist in the
Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of
the Year 2007 competition, Calum will be joined by Andy May (piano) and
Lauren MacColl (winner of the Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2004/5 who charmed us
few weeks ago with her perfect fiddle technique). The wooden flute was once
a cornerstone of Scottish traditional music, yet has been overshadowed in
the last century by the fiddle and other instruments. In the right hands, it
is an instrument that is capable of expressing every twist and turn of human
emotion. Calum has those hands. http://www.calumstewart.com/.

Poozies at Birnam

For its June event, Birnam-based promotions group The Fiddle Tree has managed to entice ever-popular Celtic band The Poozies back to Highland Perthshire for their only Tayside appearance this year in what should be another sellout show. The group is undertaking a special, short UK tour with - for the first time since their very early days - a five-piece line-up which will include both founder member / sensational singer Sally Barker and top fiddler Eilidh Shaw, recently returned to the fold after taking a year out on maternity leave.

The Poozies began their career in 1990 after Patsy Seddon and Mary Macmaster, aka the Scottish harp duo, Sileas, had been working with singer Sally Barker on a solo album. They all agreed that a new women's group was a good idea and when Sally met the all-Ireland accordion champion, Karen Tweed, at the Hong Kong Folk Festival, the band was born.

Since their formation, the Poozies have enjoyed great success wherever they have travelled, due largely to the spirit of joy in their music which is at their core, whatever changes are on the surface.

With Sally there is an element of rock music present - she was once described as "the only person I've heard SCREAM in tune", (Shetland Folk Festival). When Sally left to start a family, the "voice of the nineties", Kate Rusby, joined.

With Kate came a more traditional flavour and a blossoming of the harmony singing that is such a trade-mark of the Poozies. However, Kate's meteoric rise to stardom, via the Mercury Awards swept her away from the band to concentrate on solo work and a new metamorphosis occurred.

Joining old-timers, Patsy, Karen, and Mary came the quite delightful Eilidh Shaw, a great young West Coast (of Scotland) fiddler with a healthy and impressive musical pedigree. Eilidh grew up playing fiddle in her parent's ceilidh band, The Highfield Band, which is in demand over the whole of Britain because it is one of the best Scottish Country Dance Bands around.

The musical chemistry between Karen and Eilidh is stunning. The exquisite accordion and the delicate interweaving fiddle create a magical world of harmony and counter-melody, decorated and melded by the nylon and metal strung harps of Patsy and Mary. The fabtastic Camac electro-harp underpins the unfolding arrangements, and Patsy's twinned fiddle casts beams of rhythm into the mix.

Poozies are masters of arranging and both their instrumental sets and their songs can take you on a journey through a sometimes fantastical landscape. Perhaps even more spine-tingling are the close vocal harmonies which intensify the songs drawn not only from the rich vein of traditional Scottish Gaelic culture but also from any enticing genre.

The success of the Poozies is evidenced by their continued popularity with audiences. They play to packed houses wherever they go and they are constantly in demand at festivals throughout the summer months.
