Upcoming events in Highland Perthshire

Jim Malcolm concert at the TaybankThis Saturday night (March 10th) Jim Malcolm is giving a concert at the Taybank hotel in Dunkeld, and will be performing songs from Perthshire and Angus alongside some lovely Burns songs from his new CD release, Acquaintance. The Taybank's intimate music room, which seats only 40, is a perfect setting for Jim's music and these concerts are always good fun events. Isle of Skye born fiddler Kat Liley's playing is greatly influenced by Cape Breton fiddling and old style piping. Small pipes, border pipes and whistle player David Adam has built up a wide repertoire on each instrument including Spanish, Brazilian, Scottish and Irish tunes. Laid back snowboarding guitarist David Sutherland was taught by the legendary Jim Hunter and has a versatile approach to both accompaniment and melody. Skelpaig's growing reputation is for excellent musical skills, excitement and innovation with a spiky wee funky edge!

Tues 10 April - Lauren MacColl Trio
Since winning the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2005, Lauren MacColl has gone from strength to strength fronting her trio with Barry Reid and James Ross. Fiddle led, with the driving combination of piano and guitar, they take you on a musical journey from rousing Highland strathspeys and reels, to emotive Gaelic airs. As a trio they have developed a sound which has been described as 'Spellbinding... Starkly beautiful'. 'When Leaves Fall' her stunning debut has just been released on her own label 'Make Believe Records'.

The Nashville Acoustic All-Stars will play a select few gigs in Scotland while on a fleeting visit to the UK to attend the Sore Fingers weekend in the Cotswolds in April. This not-to-be-missed coming-together features top players Rob Ickes on dobro, Casey Driessen on fiddle and Noam Pikelny on banjo. These guys have played with everyone from Tim O'Brien and Willie Nelson to Ricky Skaggs, Steve Earle, Béla Fleck and Darol Anger. Noam has just been invited to join Chris Thile's 'Nickel Creek' band.

All musicians aspire to stretch themselves, but few seem so gripped by the urge as Lau: award winning west-Highland fiddler Aidan O'Rourke, expat English accordionist Martin Green, and Orcadian singer/guitarist Kris Drever. Before they joined forces last year, each was busy forging a reputation for outstanding technical prowess allied to a restless sense of adventure. Together they are nigh-on explosive. Armed with a largely original repertoire and a fearless appetite for improvising, their material weaves a kaleidoscopic array of influences, with flashes of East-European, Scandinavian, swing, honky-tonk and even Tex-Mex styles. One the few truly great musicians to come out of the British folk revival of the 1960's. Professional since about 1970, he is simply a stunning singer with a wonderfully expressive and carefully controlled and passionate voice, allied to a dazzling guitar technique. His musical collaborations include - Billy Bragg, Emmylou Harris, Tom Paxton, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Deacon Blue, Maya Angelou, The Dubliners, Loudon Wainwright III - the list goes on and on!
