Nazareth Robert the Bruce Concert

To mark the 700th anniversary of the Crowning of King Robert the Bruce, Dunfermline Heritage Trust has organised a concert in the Carnegie Hall on Saturday 23rd September featuring Nazareth and fiddler Pete Clark.

One of Scotland’s top fiddlers, Dunfermline born Pete Clark will be writing a specially commissioned tune on Bruce specifically for this occasion. He will be joined on stage by local rock legends Nazareth who will be playing the first part of the concert acoustically before going on to raise the roof in the second half with some of their trade mark hits specially selected for a home audience.

Tickets for this unique crossover concert sold out within days of going on sale. In order to satisfy the demand for tickets Nazareth and Pete Clark have agreed to put on an extra night on Sunday 24th September. However fans are urged to snap up their tickets soon as Carnegie Hall manager Evan Henderson expects this concert to attract another ‘House Full’ sign. Fans have bought tickets from as far afield as Canada and New York.

Explaining the reason behind adding another date, Pete Agnew said: “We have a lot of European fans and people travel form abroad to see us. We were in Switzerland at the weekend and many fans there had already booked their flight to Scotland for the concert without having a ticket in the hope that they would get one over here”

Pete is eagerly looking forward to the two concerts:

“Performing in Dunfermline is a bit different because when you look at the audience you realise that you know everyone’s first name and it’s kind of like playing at a party. We really love playing here but we never get the chance to do it much, so we’re looking forward to it. The band hasn’t played in the hall since 1973 so it will be really nice to come home”

Tickets for the concert priced £15 can be booked by telephoning Carnegie Hall on 01383314000.

Shooglenifty at Birnam House Hotel - THIS FRIDAY

One of Scotland's finest ever bands, the Edinburgh-based sextet "Shooglenifty", play a very rare (possibly first!) Highland Perthshire concert this Friday, September 15th in The Baronial Hall of the Birnam House Hotel.

In addition to having a huge fan base here in the UK, the band is internationally renowned, having made a number of successful trips to various corners of the world, including North & Central America, Australia, New Zealand and most parts of Europe.
Recent appearances include a run of sellout concerts at the Famous Spiegel Tent during this year's Edinburgh Fringe. The band's last gig in Perthshire was also a sellout show at the new Perth Concert Hall during Perth Festival in May.

To understand why, read the following review for their latest album:

Radical Mestizo
The sixth album from Scottish roots/rave legends Shooglenifty, Radical Mestizo is named after a Mexican journalist’s attempt to encapsulate their music in Spanish. This their second live recording, representing the pick of tracks from gigs taped over the past year in Mexico City, Veracruz, Indiana, Glasgow and Glenuig. In attempting to capture the unique incendiary fervour of their concerts on disc, the six-piece band have effectively set themselves an impossible task: their onstage ensemble dynamic – and inexorable expertise at cranking up the mood over the course of a show – can’t be reproduced in sound alone. There’s nonetheless plenty of fun to be had, in extended versions of material drawn mainly from their last studio set, The Arms Dealer’s Daughter. Here it’s seething and glittering with extra guitar aggression, deftly applied samples and a wealth of wild, dazzling improvisation – the latter usually centred on the superb front-line partnership between Angus Grant’s fiddle and Luke Plumb’s mandolin. The key aspect of Shooglenifty performances that does shine through is the band’s seemingly inexhaustible ability to ring fresh changes and thereby reinvent even their most familiar and favourite tunes – combined, of course, with the vividly drawn melodies and barnstorming rhythmic drive of the tunes themselves.

Sue Wilson SUNDAY HERALD 20th February 2005

This Friday's gig starts at 8.30pm. Tickets are only available direct from The Birnam House Hotel (01350 727462), priced £12 / £8 (concessions).

Leith Folk Club - The October Gigs

Tuesday 3rd October Deaf Shepherd
“Blaze-of-glory dance sets, a charge of fiddles, pipes, guitar, bouzouki and bodhran, expertly tempered with graceful slower interludes and John Morran's marvelously expressed singing”-The Scotsman. Deaf Shepherd are John Morran (vocals/guitar), Clare McLaughlin (fiddle), Jenna Reid (fiddle), Finlay MacDonald (pipes), Malcolm Stitt (bouzouki) and Mark Maguire (percussion/bodhran).

Tuesday 10th October Nick Keir
From Finn MacCuill to 7.84 to the McCalmans Nick has developed into an outstanding singer/songwriter and accomplished musician on guitar, mandolin, whistles and moothie. As his most recent album and his excellent previous gig and support spots at the club have proved Nick is a superb performer/entertainer in his own right.

Tuesday 17th October Shona Kipling & Damien O'Kane
Shona, from Co Durham (piano accordion), was a finalist in the BBC 2002 Young Folk awards and has, three times, been a finalist in the All Ireland Fleadh competition. Shona plays a varied mix of material from Scandinavia, England, France and Ireland and her recent CD “pure chance”, with Damien (vocals/banjo/guitar), showcases an individual and flexible style and a box playing talent that is up there with the best of them. Damien, from Coleraine Co Derry, is a fantastic lead and accompanist musician and is a member of, the young Newcastle based band, Crosscurrent.

Tuesday 24th October Tommy Peoples
A rare visit to Scotland by the legendary Irish fiddler from Co Donegal. Tommy has been central to the Irish traditional music scene since the mid sixties when he moved to Dublin as a teenager. A founder member of the revolutionary Bothy Band and composer of many great tunes Tommy now lives a more quiet life near Ennis, Co Clare. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear this most admired of all present day Irish fiddlers in solo performance and intimate surroundings.

Tuesday 31st October Sgorrabreac
The Edinburgh based 4 piece Gaelic band make a welcome return to the club having just released their second album. Rapidly growing in popularity since the release of their first album “Eadar Muir Is Tir” (On Land And Sea) Sgorrabreac are Margaret Nicolson (vocals), Michel Byrne (vocals/djembe), Orna Gilchrist (fiddle) and Stewart McDonald (guitar). “Superb singing, well crafted arrangements and a real sense of where the songs have come from”.

It may take the ear a second or two to adjust to a piano playing traditional music but that only lasts as long as it takes the other players to jump right in.
