Cliar on tour this week

Cliar released their newest album Grinn, Grinn just before Christmas, and the critics have been kind! The band has just returned from a successful trip to New York, where they played at the City Lore Poetry Festival (and had a great time to boot!) and have just launched their new website at http://www.cliar.com/, which will shortly become completely bilingual. They are off to play four gigs in Tiree, Mull, Islay and Denholm before the end of this month. Details below.

Take three of Gaeldom's finest young singers, add equally good clarsach and pipes, and spread on a foundation of inspired accompaniment: that's Cliar, the latest Gaelic supergroup. Grinn Grinn is their third full album, eleven tracks of songs including two stunning "puirt a'beul" sets, plus two instrumental tracks led by new boy Hector Henderson. From the rare and intriguing Si Nighean Mo Ghaoil to the Irish favourite An Gille Mear, Cliar's repertoire covers all aspects of Gaelic song. Their music is energetic, imaginative and deeply moving. The vocal front line of Mary Ann Kennedy, Maggie MacDonald and Arthur Cormack produces gorgeous clarity and powerful harmonies. The backing vocals from Ross Martin, Ingrid and Hector Henderson are second to none. Multi-instrumentalists Ingrid and Hector weave melodies around the enchanting words of Ho Ro Mo Chuachag and Mo Run air na Maraichean, and take the lead in a wonderful medley of 9/8 pipe tunes. They're joined by Allan Henderson's fiddle for the final set of reels, recorded on tour with Altan: lovely stuff.

For sheer beautiful sadness, Iain Ghlinn Cuaich is hard to beat: a classic song of unrequited love, magnificently sung here. The contrast between this bittersweet story and the punchy mouth music tracks is striking. Cliar take the unusual step of mixing "puirt a'beul" with instrumental breaks, setting voice alongside pipes and whistles, and I must say the vocals more than hold their own. Grinn Grinn mixes ancient and modern songs, showing the best of both. A Nighneag a'Ghraidh is a stunning 20th century composition from the island of Harris, arranged sensitively by Arthur and Hector. Si Nighean Mo Ghaoil is two hundred years older, but the slightly funky backing is a perfect fit. And so it goes on. With informative sleeve notes (including translations) and online sales at www.gaelicmusic.com, this recording is a highly accessible taste of Gaelic culture .... Alex Monaghan

Featuring some of Gaeldom's very finest singers and instrumentalists Cliar (pronounced "Clear") are a six-piece band - Arthur Cormack, Hector Henderson, Ingrid Henderson, Mary Ann Kennedy, Maggie MacDonald and Ross Martin - who have developed a unique close harmony vocal sound backed up by an instrumental powerhouse.

Following on from last year’s very successful inaugural event, Blas today announces the programme for this year’s festival. With a veritable galaxy of stars from the Highlands and Island, Canada and Ireland taking part, all the ingredients are there to ensure that Blas 2006 will be as good, if not better than last year. Among the many high-profile artistes featuring during the Blas Festival in September will be Julie Fowlis, Capercaillie, Jenna Cumming, Blazin’ Fiddles and Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain. Joining them will be such as the exciting young Cape Breton band, Beòlach and Ireland’s ever-popular Michael McGoldrick. Blas’s aim is also to give young, local musicians a high profile during the festival. This objective is more than achieved through the many appearances of the talented Cèilidh Trailers associated with different Fèisean and students for the Plockton High School Centre of Excellence.

Brian O hEadhra, Blas’s Artistic Director who was deeply involved in drawing up the exciting programme for Blas 2006 is very content with its shape and balance. “The programme simply oozes musical talent from this area and from places with which we have a cultural affinity. I believe that the mix of our young burgeoning talent with artistes who are slightly longer in the tooth and also performers from Canada and Ireland will prove irresistible to lovers of traditional music. Achieving the mix and the quality reflected in this year’s programme has taken some time but I think our efforts have been well worthwhile and that the stage is set for a great Blas 2006.”

This year Blas adds Nairn and Badenoch & Strathspey to the areas which featured events last year, namely Skye & Lochalsh, Lochaber, Ross-shire and Caithness & Sutherland. From the outset, Blas aimed to achieve a Highland-wide impact and the addition of thee two districts is a step in this direction.

Another innovation is the introduction of an ‘Earlybird’ ticket which gives significant reductions for those purchasing before the end of June. As last year ‘The Booth’ provided the facility to buy tickets online. This year Blas has added a central box office facility for credit card and postal purchases. These together with local sales should make it even easier for concert-goers to secure their seats.

A’ leantainn fèis shoirbheachail na bliadhna an uiridh, tha Blas an-diugh a’ foillseachadh clàr fèis na bliadhna seo. Le an t-uamhas rionnagan mòra bho air feadh na Gaidhealtachd ‘s nan eileanan, Èirinn agus Canada ag gabhail pàirt, tha a h-uile coltas ann gum bi fèis Blas 2006 pailt cho math, mur a bi nas fheàrr, na tè na bliadhna ‘n uiridh.

A-measg an fheadhainn a bhitheas a’ nochdadh aig fèis Blas san t-Sultaine bi Capercaillie, Jenna Cumming, Blazin’ Fiddles agus Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain. Còmhla riutha sin, bi an còmhlan òg a Ceap Bhreatuinn, Beòlach agus Michael McGoldrick à Èirinn. Bi Blas ag amas air prìomhachas a thoirt do luchd-ciùil ionadail, òg, troimh’n fhèis. Thathar an dòchas seo a choilionadh troimh Cèilidh Trailers agus oileanaich bho Sgoil Chiùil na Gaidhealtachd anns a’ Phloc.

Tha Brian O hEadhra, Stiùiriche Ealain Blas, a tha air a bhi gu mòr a’ sàs ann a bhi a’ dealbh clàr Blas 2006, air leth toilichte le a chumadh agus a chothromachd. “Tha an clàr a’ taomadh le tàlant ciùil bho iomadh àite leis a bheil dàimh againn. Tha mise dhen bheachd gum bi a’ measgachadh de luchd-ciùil òg agus an fheadhainn a Canada agus a Èirinn eagallach fhèin tarraingeach dhan fheadhainn a tha measail air ceòl traidiseanta. Tha a bhi a’ faighinn an cothromachd a th’againn sa chlàr air ùine mhath a thoirt ach tha mi a’ creidsinn gur a math a b’fheuch e an t-saothair agus gu bheil sinn a-nise deiseil airson Blas 2006 a bhi sònraichte da rìreabh.”

Tha Blas na bliadhna seo a’ cuir Bàideanach agus Srath Spè ri na h-àiteachan anns an robh e an uiridh, leithid an t-Eilean Sgitheanach agus Loch Aillse, Loch Abair, Rois, agus Gallaibh agus Cataibh. Bhon dol-a-mach, chuir Blas romhpa buaidh a bhi aca air feadh na Gaidhealtachd agus tha a bhi a’ cuir an dà roinn sin ris as ùr, a’ toirt air adhart an amas seo.

Tha tiocaid air a bheil ‘Earlybird’ na rud ùr eile. Tha seo a’ toirt prìsean nas saoire dhaibh-san a cheannaicheas iad roimh dheireadh na h-Òg-Mhios. Mar a bha an uiridh, bi “Am Booth” a’ toirt cothrom tiocaidean a cheannach air loidhne. Am bliadhna, tha Blas air goireas a chuir air dòigh airson tiocaidean fhaighinn leis a’ chairt-chreideas ar neo troimh’n phost. Tha na rudan sin, còmhla ri na reiceas sinn gu h-ionadail, a’ dol ga dhèanadh nas fhasa buileach tiocaidean fhaighinn airson Blas 2006.

Fiddle Tree Concerts - 2006

Top Scots Duo At Highland Perthshire Concert

The next event by Birnam-based promotions group "The Fiddle Tree" is a concert by the immensely talented duo of Ivan Drever & Duncan Chisholm. The pair will play The Baronial Hall, Birnam House Hotel, Perth Road, Birnam on Friday May 26th with an 8.30pm start.

Much respected Orkney musician, Ivan Drever is well known throughout the world of traditional music for his songwriting as well as his work with Scottish band Wolfstone and, of course, for his highly successful partnership with fiddler Duncan Chisholm. Not only will you find his songs on Wolfstone albums, but the Dubliners and Davy Arthur are among a number of international artists to have recorded them. He has also written music for US based dancer Liam Harney and has several solo albums to his credit.

Duncan Chisholm hails from Kirkhill in Ross-shire. He was taught to play fiddle from the age of eight by crofter Donald Riddell and has been at the forefront of Scottish fiddle playing for many years. Early in his career Duncan was a Mod Medal winner and since then he has appeared with a number of top-notch Scottish artists both live and on recordings as a guest. In addition to his work with Ivan, he remains part of Wolfstone and is involved in a wide range of "extra-cirricular" musical activities! Duncan has released two solo albums, " Red Point " and "Door of Saints".

Ivan and Duncan are well established as one of Scotland's top duos, playing mainly traditional venues and festivals across the UK, Europe and the USA. Their current album "A Long December Night" is available on both CD and DVD.

Their appearance in Birnam is part of their 2006 UK tour - the pair work together less frequently nowadays as Ivan moved to Spain in 2005. This is therefore a rare opportunity to enjoy two of the country's finest performers in an intimate concert setting.

Tickets are priced £8 in advance, £10 on the door. As with all Fiddle Tree events, tickets for under-18s cost £3, or 2 for a fiver.
They are available now from The Birnam House Hotel (01350 727462), Birnam CD (01350 727158) and Zigzags, Dunkeld (01350 728666).

Future Fiddle Tree promotions include concerts by Michael Marra plus Heather Macleod and The Healthy Measures (June 22nd), Eric Bogle and John Munro (August 30th) and British Blues legend Tony McPhee, the former frontman of The Groundhogs (September 27th). All events are at The Birnam House Hotel. For more information, visit http://www.fiddletree.com
