BELLADRUM TICKETS ON SALE

Tickets to Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk go on sale 9.00 AM Friday 3rd March both on-line and through retail outlets. Now in its third year, the festival takes place at Belladrum, near Beauly in Inverness-shire on 11th and 12th August 2006.

In response to a stream of enquiries from festival-goers, this year’s festival box office is in business two months ahead of its 2005 opening.

And in a coup for the festival, the legendary Arlo Guthrie* is booked to play his first ever Scottish festival there, marking his first appearance in Scotland since 1999. Belladrum will be the only Scottish date on his European tour and he follows in the shoes of fellow Woodstock legends Country Joe MacDonald who played last year’s event.

“The backstage restaurant for artists – commended last year by The Proclaimers as the best festival food ever – has been called Alice’s Restaurant for the past two years, after its manager Alice Laing**. So it seemed only fair that we should invite Arlo over to try it out,” said festival director Joe Gibbs

The rest of the line-up of approximately 45 acts over three stages at the two-day festival will be announced over the coming months.

Weekend tickets cost £60 and are available on line via the web site www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk, via Ticketmaster.com and other outlets(see below for details). Tickets are only available in advance and a limited release of Saturday tickets costing £40 will go on sale 9.00 AM 16th June if available. Children 12 and under attend free. Besides what promises to be another wide-ranging bill of rock, indie, Celtic, world, blues and country music, this year’s festival features a new theatre tent which will house an increased performing arts element.

Set in the beautiful Highland surroundings of Belladrum Estate, the critically acclaimed festival has rapidly achieved a cult status amongst festival-goers North (and South) of the border. A mellow, family friendly event – sometimes referred to as the mini Glastonbury of the North – Belladrum offers plenty of interest aside from the music, including an array of entertainment for children. Attractions include street theatre, cabaret, cinema, dance, alternative therapies, stalls, food and drink.

Weekend tickets cost £60 (incl VAT, excl booking fee) and entitle holders to free parking and camping 4.00 PM 10th August – 1.00 PM 13th August. Children 12 and under enter free. Passes are needed for parking and under 12s. Check the web site www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk for details.

For a third year, Belladrum Festival has announced that Maggie’s Cancerm Care Centre will be the beneficiary of a charitable donation from the festival. BBC Scotland has come on board as broadcast media partner for the event in 2006.

Retail outlets for tickets from 3rd March will include: Tickets Scotland (Edinburgh and Glasgow); Ripping Records (Edinburgh); One-Up Records (Aberdeen): Hootananny’s and Eden Court (Inverness). On-line and telephone outlets include Ticketmaster and The Booth (from 13th March).

Pete Clark Interview on Thistle & Shamrock

Pete Clark returns to Fiona Ritchie's Thistle & Shamrock program to introduce us to the music of 18th Scottish fiddler and composer Red Rob Mackintosh (1745-1807), with stories and some colorful history of the period. Pete took fiddler Heather Netz, cellist Christine Hanson and pianist Jim Leighton along with him to the music room of ancient Murthly Castle, just the sort of setting in which Mackintosh is likely to have played, and we'll hear some of the tunes they recorded there.

If you would like to tune into the show go to the Thistle & Shamrock Website

Leith Folk Club listings for March 2006

7th March Lyra Celtica
The band features former BBC YTM of the year Lynn Tocker on accordion, the irrepressible Chuck Fleming (fiddle and mandolin) who has played within innumerable outfits and locations ranging from the JSD Band to the entire duration of a bus trip from Edinburgh to Galashiels. Completing the line-up are Frank McGuire (Bodhran, whistle and percussion) and Mark Canning (guitar and vocals).

14th March Mike Whellans
The Scottish one man live wire blues band, Mike displays his virtuoso skills on guitar, voice (and mouth-percussion), mouth-harp, drums and percussion. Experience really good, driving, straight-ahead blues in the hands, feet and mouth (!) of a first class musician. Great music and great entertainment, with his own style of boogie, blues and humour.

21st March Jim Condie’s Distant Cousins
“Distant Cousins, there's a limited supply, they're down to the dozens, and this is why...” (Captain Beefheart, 1972) Condie's reputation in electric and acoustic blues/Americana/rock music has been earned through working alongside a huge range of performers, legends in their own time, ranging from Van (the Man) to Hercules (the Bear). Jim blends his love of American traditional music with self-penned and contemporary songs and instrumentals that serve as a showcase for his talents on vocals, acoustic guitar, Dobro, mandolin, lap steel and bass. With son Leo, Heather Macleod, Ashley MacMillan and Alan Thomson.“Make no mistake, Jim Condie is Scotland’s answer to Ry Cooder”

28th March Allan Taylor
His voice makes your hair stand on end. He is one of the great English songwriters, a sophisticated musician and a writer of intensity and brevity, and most of his material has an emotional reach that leaves you reeling. Streaked with moments that recall Tom Waits’ best work, Allan Taylor is a singularly seductive songwriter, singing with a talking blues gruffness as befits the material, sounding somewhat like Mark Knopfler’s laid back older brother. “beautifully crafted, worldly-wise songs with beguiling, precision-built guitar accompaniments”

entry.... £5.00 at the door (£8.00 for Allan Taylor)
times.... 7.30 for 8.00pm each evening
smoking.... not in the performance area, ok in the bar

A HIGHLAND TAPESTRY – 24th/25th February 2006

Lochan, Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd and Troca are weaving together a unique piece of colourful performance based in Plockton. The weekend is part of Highland 2007; the year Scotland celebrates Highland culture. It will be a special event organised by 3 groups in Lochalsh who promote cultural development and encourage everyone, particularly young folk, to participate! The colourful international dimension comes through TROCA, a practical educational project that, amongst other things, promotes community arts and music projects in both Scotland and the developing world.

Over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of February, there will be performances and workshops in Plockton High School, the Music Centre at the High school, and in Plockton village hall.

The Friday night concert is FOR AULD LANG SYNE - A Celebration of Burns, with Margaret Bennett and Sandy Stanage.

Fresh from Celtic Connections 2006, and first scripted for Celtic Connections 2003 as 'The Cotter's Saturday Night', this piece of musical theatre visits Plockton with a scaled down cast and production but promises to be equally exciting. A sell-out in 2003, 2004 and 2005, the show presents a fresh, imaginative portrayal of the life, character, personality and genius of Robert Burns. Highly entertaining, amusing and moving, it is performed in costume by first-rate musicians, singers and dancers. The performance features singer/script-writer Margaret Bennett, guitarist/musical director Sandy Stanage and a supporting cast including dancers Jamie MacDonald Reid and Hamish Napier, singers Doris Rougvie and Terry Dey, and Sarah Parker on fiddle.

Previous reviews of this show have described it as "Unforgettable!", "Absolutely riveting ...should have been on the TV..." and "Could have sold out twice!"

On Saturday 25th, Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd will host 10 different workshops on folklore, Scots song, guitar, and Scottish dance. These will be run by the visiting musicians and dancers. There will also be 2 Latin American folklore workshops lead by Louisa MacInnes of TROCA.

On the Saturday evening, the 25th, Mary-Jane Campbell will host a singers’ ceilidh in the Plockton Village Hall. As well as involving performers and participants from the Burns show, the lineup for this event will be enhanced by Sylvia Barnes, Willie Beaton, James Graham, and students of Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd. Food, refreshments and the bar over the weekend will be run by and in aid of TROCA.

A package for the weekend comprising the two evening events and any two workshops can be pre-booked from Lochan for £25 or £15 for students.
Further details and to book e:Miriam@painting-in-plockton.co.uk or t:01599544442

Tickets for the Auld Lang Syne concert are available from Sgoil Chiùil Na Gàidhealtachd (t: 01599 544706), Plockton Post Office (t: 01599544308) or on the door, priced £10 (£8 Lochan members, £5 under 18’s).

Jenna Cumming - Kintulavig Ref: SKYECD36
Jenna Cumming has a rare singing talent, which has been evident since she was a very young girl. Encouraged by her mother, Gaelic singer Chrissie MacVicar, the whole of Gaeldom has watched over the years as she has gone on to win no less than 3 Gold Medals at the National Mòd: the Comunn Gàidhealach Gold Medal, the Mary Lamont Gold Medal for traditional singing and the Oban Times Gold Medal. But these were just the most recent in a string of prizes she has won. And little wonder. In Jenna, you have a lovely, natural voice, and the clearest Gaelic you could wish for. She is undoubtedly a star, and this CD amply demonstrates that she deserves her place among the best young Gaelic singers of today. The album has been long-awaited, and you won’t be disappointed. A Scottish Romance Ref: TMKCD037
A compilation album ideal for MacValentine's Day and beyond. Julienne Taylor, Marc Andrew, The Munros and other artistes sing and play ballads of love and dedication; traditional, classic and contemporary. I Don't Wanna Talk About It, Ae Fond Kiss, Loch Lomond, and best of all, the gorgeously detailed yet superbly minimalist All You Need To Know, by the lush-voiced Duncan McCrone. Sigh!

Price: £10.20 £11.99 with VAT at 17.5% (European Union only)

The Sound Of Barra Ref: KG002
The sounds of a ceilidh from years ago, from the musical stronghold of Barra. The community gathers, bringing singers of all ages, musicians, soloists and group artistes. Gaelic song, pibroch, clarsach and the thump of the waulked tweed with the pops, hisses and crackles adding atmosphere to the recording

Price: £10.20 £11.99 with VAT at 17.5% (European Union only)

Niamh Parsons With Graham Dunne - The Old Simplicity Ref: GLCD1232
Old simple style it may be, but it's a refreshing change from some incongruously orchestrated folk manners! Niamh has a pure high voice, ideal to carry the tender emotions of the songs. Most are relatively recent compositions; songs of hunger, of danger, of death and defeat, but they are offset by the gently airy instrumentals which relax the ear. Not an easy album emotionally, but a beautiful one in tone, with Niamh's clear vocals highlighted by Graham Dunne's guitar and Dennis Cahill's bouzouki and mandolin.

Live and decidedly kicking, David South and his boys (and girl!) power up from Down Under for an evening's programme of dances. John Spiers & John Boden - Songs Ref: FECD194
More traditional English folk song from the bold lads themselves. Ancient balladry, cuckoldry, murder, revenge killings, and an avenging Christ. Very traditional, very tabloid, very enjoyable. Vocals, melodeons, concertinas, fiddle & guitar.

Seventy-three years' playing experience, and every minute of it shows! Chris is not a doitled old codger but a musician still in his prime, blazing through reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes and slow airs with consummate ease. His instrument is the 'matchbox', technically identified as the concertina, and ideally suited to these bouncy Irish dance tunes. No fuss, no affectation, just skill, experience and enjoyment, with a bright accompaniment on piano and guitar.
