It’s been a couple of years of change since the last album but the new line up has emerged stronger than ever, still capable of ‘bringing you heaven without the inconvenience, as it were, of going to the other side’ (Rob Adams, The Herald). New Jenna Cumming CD Kintulavig - SKYECD36

Jenna Cumming has a rare singing talent, which has been evident since she was a very young girl. Encouraged by her mother, Gaelic singer Chrissie MacVicar, the whole of Gaeldom has watched over the years as she has gone on to win no less than 3 Gold Medals at the National Mòd: the Comunn Gàidhealach Gold Medal, the Mary Lamont Gold Medal for traditional singing and the Oban Times Gold Medal. But these were just the most recent in a string of prizes she has won. And little wonder. In Jenna, you have a lovely, natural voice, and the clearest Gaelic you could wish for. She is undoubtedly a star, and this CD amply demonstrates that she deserves her place among the best young Gaelic singers of today. The album has been long-awaited, and you won’t be disappointed. Three Peace Sweet - Blue Skies Ref: MMCD0501
Third album from Three Peace Sweet. Many rhythmic styles from around the world interlaced with their own contemporary folk tunes and songs. Features guests from Scotland and the United States. Title track ‘Blue Skies’ is a haunting pipe ballad – in contrast ‘S.S. Thorfinn’ is a medium-tempo song based on the true story of a near disaster at sea in 1953. However, in typical TPS fashion, there is still plenty of energetic ‘stomp’ music to keep the feet tapping and a live audience jumping.

Recorded in the serene setting of Crear Studios on the West Coast of Argyll, the album evolved from live sessions with James Grant (guitar), James MacKintosh (percussion), Donald Shaw (piano/accordion), Ewen Vernal (double bass) and Donal Lunny.

Mary Jane Lamond - Stòras Ref: 02-06363
Mary Jane's clear diction and clarity of tone make her singing a delight. Some of the songs are presented in quite a traditional manner, others in a more contemporary style; many of the songs have their roots in Mary Jane's own Cape Breton Gaelic heritage, others are from our side of the pond. All are quite beautifully arranged, with talented friends playing in on some tracks.

Jennifer Wilson - A Dancing Master Remembered Ref: JWPCD01
Piano maestress Jennifer worked with dance teacher Bill Ireland for over thirty years, so her knowledge of his favourite tunes and musical styles is very accurate. Having finally been persuaded into the studio, Jennifer has produced a superb album of the music Bill loved, in the solo piano style he so admired. Full-length dances played with tremendous skill and huge enthusiasm. 'Just' piano and drums, yet a massively satisfying sound.

422 - Major Third Ref: FECD191
The winners of the 1999 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award present their third album. Since their inception they have juggled University courses with gigging and have emerged as a highly accomplished, tight unit with wonderfully intricate arrangements, but without having lost sight of the drive and 'soul' of the music. Folk On Tap magazine said "[their] playing is excellent, the arrangements inventive, the choice of tunes interesting and the whole imbued with the drive and energy of youth". This new CD sees them more experienced both in terms of live performance and music, but without losing sight of the essential qualities which made them stand out from other groups of young musicians. The mix is as eclectic as before taking its sources from Britain, Europe and beyond. Each CD has out-sold the previous one and this one should consolidate their position as one of the best on the UK scene.

Martyn Wyndham-Read and No Man's Band - Oceans In The Sky Ref: FECD197
Martyn Wyndham-Read has been one of the Fellside roster of artists since 1981. He has 5 CDs currently available plus two volumes of the prestigious and highly acclaimed 'Song Links' albums, of which he was the main instigator. He emerged in the 1970s as one of 'voices' of the Folk Revial which included Nic Jones, Vin Garbutt, Tony Rose, Dave Burland and Dick Gaughan. Marty established his reputation as a singer of Australian folk songs, but over the years has championed songwriters who are not necessarily well-known names. This collection features songs by Eric Bogle and Cyril Tawney sitting alongside songs by lesser know writers such as Mike O'Connor, Jane Coombes, and Steve Peters among others.

Jim Malcolm - Tam O'Shanter & Other Tales Ref: BELCD104
Jim's gorgeous voice & slick guitar talents make all his albums special. This one's extra special because of his excellent work on setting Burn's poem Tam O' Shanter to music. No ancient folk ditty this, but an only-too-recognisable drunkard's nightmare experience, brought into unwontedly sharp focus by the contemporary atmosphere of the music. Others of his songs plus some traditional gems complete this wonderful album.

2. Blindness of my Youth

Manson Grant & The Dynamos - Take Me For Who I Am Ref: CDPAN015
A real easy-listener here, with unabashedly excellent cover versions of country songs, plus dance tunes and a couple of laid-back lyrics written by Dave Sheriff. Switching deftly between country sound, mini Big Band and ceilidh group: Manson sings and plays box, bass and trumpet; Daniel sings and plays box, and Robert Cameron takes drums and sax. A very enjoyable all-round sound.

Irish Folk Festival 2005: Tunes For Tara Ref: MMRCD1040
Part of the Irish Folk Festival series, this CD also highlights the plight of Ireland's heritage sites; but they won't flatten this under tarmac, for the energy contained here is way too strong. Solas, Beoga, Phamie Gow, Kevin Burke & Ged Foley strut their Celtic stuff with fiddles, harp, voices, button boxes, bodhran, whistles, guitars and bass. Tremendous sets from groups, duo and solo artiste - the Celtic spirit lives!

Ivan Drever - The Orkney Years Vol. 2 Ref: ATCD068
Fourteen tracks from Ivan; two trad., the rest his own. Previously issued years ago on cassettes, these songs have proven so popular that Ivan has been persuaded to transfer them to CD. Gentle, thought-provoking songs, with Ivan's trademark skilled guitar accompaniment.

Price: £10.20 £11.99 with VAT at 17.5% (European Union only)

The Orkney Sessions From The Reel Ref: ATCD070
The title says it all… But it helps to know that The Reel is a trad. music venue offering tuition, sessions and a coffeehouse and bar, and that it's run by two of Orkney's most popular musicians, Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley. Here's an album of high class live tune sets, a couple of songs and the occasional musical hiccough, just to prove it's live. Guitars, fiddle, piano, pipes, accordion, harmonica, banjo, bodhran…

Hughie Jones - Liverpool Connexions Ref: FECD198
Hughie Jones is a former member of the legendary Folk group, and major recording artists, The Spinners. Since The Spinners split several years ago Hughie has carved out a very successful solo career and this is his third CD for Fellside. He has always remained loyal to his Liverpool roots (The Spinners were originally called, The Liverpool Spinners) and has always had an enthusiasm for sea songs. This CD presents a set of songs - some well-known, others not - with a loose connection with Liverpool. Hughie's two previous CDs have been two of Fellside's best sellers and there is no reason to suppose this one will not be as he still maintains a following beyond the folk scene in the MOR market with Spinners fans.

Colin Campbell - Songs Collection Ref: CCRD005
Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes humorous and sometimes cutting, Colin's songs always reveal a true insight into Highland life. And yes, here's the Road Rage Cowboy pootling along on his tractor with a look of unadulterated wicked delight on his face, knowing that no-one can pass him! Colin must have had great fun making this DVD, for some of the songs are shot with live action to illustrate the story. On the stage, on the go, in the studio, Colin radiates justified satisfaction and a decidedly irreligious sense of humour!

New Release - Three Peace Sweet - Blue Skies

MMCD0501

Third album from Three Peace Sweet. Many rhythmic styles from around the world interlaced with their own contemporary folk tunes and songs.

Features guests from Scotland and the United States. Title track ‘Blue Skies’ is a haunting pipe ballad – in contrast ‘S.S. Thorfinn’ is a medium-tempo song based on the true story of a near disaster at sea in 1953.

However, in typical TPS fashion, there is still plenty of energetic ‘stomp’ music to keep the feet tapping and a live audience jumping.

1. Call To The Dance, Kamikaze Clader
2. S.S. Thorfinn
3. Blue Skies Ower Auskerry
4. Shine In Your Eye, Hold You Back
5. Captain Chisolm
6. Third In The World, Pentalina Cabaret, Corky Miller
7. Rescue Me
8. The Panda, Ian Campbell Of Bishopton, The Teeick, The Racky Boys
9. The Tredwell Monster
10. The Mission Hall
11. The Waaf
12. Calling Me Home
